The young skinhead syndrome: when you are a teenager growing up in certain neighborhoods, the impulse to join the side of the thugs is strong, fear makes a most compelling argument: “If I’m on the other side of the stomping, taking active part in the beating, then no kicks will be landing on my head”. Members of the oppressed classes that strongly support the oppressing ones (see “The Prince” by Niccolo Machiavelli) follow the same fear-driven impulse. Although they know in their heart of hearts the bully they suck up to will never accept them or lift the boot from their neck, they hope against hope to be spared.
