Capella Action Analytics

From 2011 to 2012, Capella University retained my services as lead interaction and visual designer for a high profile analytics system devised to help visualize complex internal data accessed by a variety of different academic stakeholders. I was responsible for the analysis, evaluation and translation of internal performance metrics in use among faculty and learners. By creating innovative information display paradigms that spoke to the different personas, I was able to bridge the gap which existed in the way different parts of the University interpreted a diverse body of interrelated content. A new system that serves data of varying degrees of complexity dependent on user request was then tested, fine-tuned and broadly implemented.

The project was eventually featured in the New York Times .

  • I hired Alfonso as a consultant to come in and work on some complex data visualizations. There was no design precedent set prior to his involvement and the data was very complex. Alfonso created the groundwork and initial concepts that grew into a student dashboard that was eventually featured in the New York Times to explain the concept of incorporating transparent competencies into a degree plan.
